This cycling route takes you through some of the most beautiful and untouched areas of western Herzegovina, with stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The route starts and ends in Posušje, spans 63 kilometers, and leads you through picturesque villages, hidden gems, and local landmarks.

Starting Point: Posušje (Stećci at Ričina)
The route begins in Posušje, a charming town rich in history and culture. Before you start your journey, take a moment to visit the stećci at Ričina, medieval monuments that bear witness to the region's rich heritage. From there, you’ll head towards the rural areas surrounding the town.

Vir and Zavelim
As you continue your ride, you will pass through the peaceful villages of Vir and Zavelim, where you will experience the traditional way of life in this rural part of Herzegovina. The area is rich in agricultural lands, with lush fields and rolling hills, offering cyclists a serene and picturesque ride.

Žukovica Waterfall
The highlight of this route is the Žukovica Waterfall, one of the region's hidden treasures. Nestled in a dense forest, accessed via a gravel road, this untouched waterfall will captivate you with its natural beauty. As you approach the waterfall, the sound of falling water and the sight of pristine nature will take your breath away. This is a perfect place to take a break and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Tribstovo Lake

End Point: Posušje (Stećci at Ričina)
After enjoying the beauty of the Žukovica Waterfall and Tribstovo Lake, the route returns to Posušje, where you can revisit the stećci at Ričina and reflect on the wonderful journey you’ve experienced.

Posušje Municipality

With an area of 461 km², ² Posušje Municipality is located in the hilly-mountainous region of western Herzegovina, home to 20,341 residents with a strong tradition, representing the best example of rural tourism development in the area. Hiking, walking, running, skiing, and more are just some of the ways you can explore the Blidinje Nature Park, the ancient village of Podbila, the architectural complex of Ričina, the Brina Canyon, the remains of ancient architecture in Grac, Tribistovo Lake, and many other attractions this municipality offers.
Posušje is an ideal destination for all lovers of mountain biking, with several cycling trails spanning 157.4 km. Cycling enthusiasts, whether recreational or sports-focused, can enjoy a mosaic of picturesque cultural and historical remnants of Ričina, Grac, Podbila, and the breathtaking landscapes of the Blidinje Nature Park. RECOMMENDATION

Although the trail mostly takes us through populated areas and you drive on an asphalt section, we also come across a macadam section of the trail, while we always think that on longer rides it is necessary to bring a mini tool and a tool for patching inner tires, so the rule also applies to this section. We definitely recommend that you inform your family or friends about your cycling plans before going for a ride.

ABOUT THE CYCLING RURAL PROJECT

Trail “L401 – Posušje (stećci on Ričina) – Vir – Zavelim – Žukovica waterfall – Tribstovo jezero – Posušje (stećci on Ričina)”, is a bicycle path that was developed and implemented within the framework of the Cycling Rural project - Bicycle routes for the improvement of the natural and cultural heritage of Herzegovina and Montenegro. The project "Cycling routes for the improvement of the natural and cultural heritage of Herzegovina and Montenegro" is carried out within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Bosnia and Herzegovina - Montenegro, which is financed by the European Union. The project officially started on October 1, 2019, and its implementation will last 18 months. The total value of the project is EUR 495,000.00, of which the European Union finances EUR 400,000.00. The partners in the project are the West Herzegovina County Government Office for European Integration as the project holder, the City of Široki Brijeg, the City of Ljubuški, the Municipality of Posušje, the Municipality of Grude and the Tourist Organization of Herceg Novi. The European Union finances this project with the aim of strengthening and diversifying the quality of the tourist offer, as well as the development of outdoor cycling and tourist offers in the rural areas of the cross-border regions of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project will result in the creation of a new and attractive offer under the "Cycling Rrural" brand, which will become part of the overall tourist offer of both countries, as well as the tourist offer of the Adriatic hinterland.
