Experience a unique ride along a cycling route that tells the story of the glorious past and historical heritage of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Mostar and its surroundings. This trail takes you through the spectacular landscapes of Podveležje, revealing a series of fortresses that once formed a key defensive network of the empire.

Historical Context

In the late 19th century, Austro-Hungary regarded Mostar as a strategically important city, building a complex system of fortifications to defend against potential threats. These fortresses were placed on elevated positions, providing excellent visibility and allowing visual communication between key points. The Podveležje region, southeast of Mostar, became a crucial zone with the highest concentration of these monumental fortifications.

The Route’s Charm and Adventurous Appeal

The “Podveležje: Austro-Hungarian Fortress Trail” begins in the heart of Mostar, leading cyclists toward Opine, where a challenging gravel climb ascends to the vast Podveležje plateau. Every pedal stroke offers a unique experience — from historical remnants of old fortresses to breathtaking natural vistas.

One of the route’s highlights is Fortica, located near a modern wind farm. Here, you will also find the popular Zip Line Fortica, an ideal stop for a coffee and delicious cake while enjoying panoramic views of Mostar and its surroundings.

After a well-deserved break, an exhilarating descent back to Mostar delivers a true sense of freedom and adrenaline — a perfect reward for the conquered climb.

Route details

The route begins at Spanish Square, in the heart of Mostar, which serves as the starting point for all cycling routes in this area. The ride heads west, passing by the Ero Hotel, where you turn left towards the Customs Bridge and the railway station. After the station, the route turns right through an underpass, where a challenging climb begins.

After crossing the M-17 highway, the trail leads to a local road ascending Fortica Hill, known for its Austro-Hungarian fortifications from the late 19th century. At the 6th kilometer, you reach a junction leading to the first fortress. A left turn takes you to this fascinating site, which you can explore in about 10 minutes on foot or by bike.

Continuing uphill, the route climbs until the 10th kilometer, where the ascent ends, and the trail opens onto the expansive Podveležje plateau. Here, the path levels out, offering panoramic views of mountain ranges and the surrounding landscape. In this section, you can see additional well-preserved Austro-Hungarian fortresses that tell the story of the region's historical significance.

At the 14th kilometer, a junction offers a gravel road leading to the summit of Mount Velež. The cycling route, however, continues on asphalt through the village of Podveležje, where you can take a break and refresh at local shops. From there, the ride follows a local road until the 25th kilometer, where it turns left and joins the Mostar – Nevesinje road.

A thrilling descent of about 10 kilometers follows, with breathtaking views of the Herceg Stjepan Kosača fortress on Hum Hill, above Blagaj—the historic seat of the ruler after whom Herzegovina is named. After the descent, the route passes through Bišće Polje and Gnojnice, connecting to the Blagaj – Mostar road. The final stretch runs along the M-17 highway beside the Neretva River, reaching the Old Bridge.

The route concludes back at Spanish Square, completing an unforgettable cycling journey rich in history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage.
