Peace Cemetery: A Place of Remembrance and Reconciliation
Located on the Bile plateau between Mostar and Široki Brijeg, The Cemetery of Peace symbolizes a profound connection to the past. This monumental memorial complex is dedicated to the victims of totalitarian regimes during and after World War II. Surrounded by the mountain ranges of Prenj, Velež, Čabulja, and Čvrsnica, the site offers stunning views from Jastrebinka toward the Adriatic Sea.
Cemetery of Peace features the PIETA – The Lamentation of Christ, a sculpture by Ilija Skočibušić that represents suffering, pain, forgiveness, and reconciliation. White stone crosses bearing the names of victims stand as solemn reminders of stories and losses from turbulent times. Wild Horses on Bilima: Freedom and the Power of Nature
On the Bilie plateau above Mostar, around 200 wild horses roam freely. Descended from nine horses released during the wars of the 1990s, they have become symbols of freedom and resilience. A group of enthusiasts ensures their welfare by providing water, food, and veterinary care when needed. Cyclists and visitors can experience a unique encounter with these majestic animals, observing their herd dynamics and learning about their lives.
During winter, the horses retreat to sheltered areas to escape harsh weather. Thanks to the care of local guardians, they receive hay, salt, and medical attention, ensuring their continued survival in the rugged karst terrain.
Stećci Necropolis in Gornji Polog: A Stone Legacy of Medieval Bosnia
At the 30th kilometer of the route lies the stećci necropolis in Gornji Polog, declared a national monument in 2020. The site contains 75 medieval tombstones, including slabs, chests, and gabled tombs. Decorative motifs such as rosettes, heraldic symbols, and anthropomorphic figures reflect the rich medieval cultural heritage of Herzegovina.
