Cycle Through History – Ćiro Trail from Ravno to Dubrovnik

If you are a cycling adventure enthusiast seeking an experience that combines untouched nature, rich history, and authentic local stories, an unforgettable journey awaits you on the Ćiro Trail from Ravno to Dubrovnik. Join us on this path that follows the historic narrow-gauge railway and discover why cyclists from around the world come to pedal along this unique route.

A Historic Railway Connecting People and Cultures

The Ćiro Trail follows the historic railway built at the beginning of the 20th century, linking Mostar with Dubrovnik and the Bay of Kotor. The first ride of the famous “Ćiro” took place on July 15, 1901. Constructed as a strategic project by Austria-Hungary, the railway soon became a vital artery for local communities. Over the decades, it carried people, goods, and stories that left a lasting imprint on the region.

Although the narrow-gauge railway was decommissioned in 1976, remnants of tracks, stations, tunnels, and bridges still bear witness to its history. Today, it has been revitalized as a cycling route connecting cultural heritage with the spectacular landscapes of Herzegovina and southern Croatia.

From Ravno to Zavala: A Ride Through History and Nature

Ninety kilometers from Mostar lies the town of Ravno, known for the medieval Church of St. Mitre and the monument dedicated to Josip Ruđer Bošković. The old railway station has been restored as a hospitality and tourism facility. From here, the cycling trail descends toward Zavala, offering breathtaking views of Popovo Polje, one of Europe’s largest karst fields.

The section from Ravno to Zavala offers a choice between paved and gravel paths. Highlights include a viaduct above a canyon and the Gradina Tunnel, home to colonies of bats. Riding through this tunnel evokes a sense of traveling through time, as the glow of bike lights reveals stone walls marked with old mileage indicators.

Zavala is renowned for the UNESCO-listed Vjetrenica Cave and the Monastery of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Historically, this was an important stop for trains connecting the Herzegovinian interior with the coast.

Toward Dubrovnik: The Road to a Mediterranean Gem

From Hum to Dubrovnik, the Ćiro Trail leads through Uskoplje and into Konavle, following the former railway line. Views of Adriatic landscapes and historic villages create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. This railway once transported goods and passengers all the way to Zelenika in Montenegro, connecting diverse peoples and cultures.

In Konavle, the narrow-gauge railway played a significant role before the construction of the Adriatic Highway. Today, cycling this route offers a journey into the past, allowing you to feel the spirit of an era when Ćiro whistled and rumbled through this remarkable landscape.

Historical Landmarks Along the Route

Uskoplje once served as a junction for two important railways: one leading to Zelenika in the Bay of Kotor and the other to Dubrovnik. Each had its own story and strategic significance. Today, as you cycle these historic routes, you can almost hear the echoes of the past – the sound of steam locomotives, the whistle, and the scent of coal.

Route details

This incredible cycling excursion begins in Zavale, a village located on the very border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The route first leads to the Cave Vjetrenica, the largest and most famous cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is also a natural monument. After exploring the cave, cyclists head toward Ivanica, with stops at viewpoints offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

In Ivanica, a small village on the Croatian border, we recommend a short break with a lunch package before continuing towards Dubrovnik. Along the way, you'll cross into the Republic of Croatia, followed by a descent towards Dubrovnik, one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic.

The cycling route from Zavale to Dubrovnik passes through historical sites like Uskoplje, which was once an important railway junction. The route also leads through Popovo Polje, an area known for its old railway stations and landmarks such as the Church of St. Mitra in Ravno. Ravno is the municipal center and cultural heart of the region, where visitors can see the monument to Josip Ruđer Bošković, Croatia's most famous scientist.

The destination of this cycling route is Dubrovnik, a Mediterranean jewel protected by UNESCO, and along the way, cyclists will enjoy untouched natural beauty and historical landmarks.

RECOMMENDATION

The trail mostly passes through uninhabited areas, so we recommend bringing plenty of water and a lunch package, especially in the summer months. The entire section is paved, but it is advisable to carry a mini tool kit and a patching kit for inner tubes. Due to the length of the route, it is recommended to inform family or friends of your cycling plans before heading out.
