ĆIRO CYCLING TRAIL – A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND NATURAL BEAUTY

You’ve probably heard of the popular Ćiro Trail, the UNESCO-listed Old Bridge in Mostar, and the picturesque town of Trebinje in southern Herzegovina. What if we told you that we’ve designed a cycling adventure that will fill your soul with unforgettable memories and breathtaking landscapes? This journey takes you along the historic narrow-gauge railway, connecting Mostar’s rich cultural heritage with the charm and tranquility of Trebinje, offering a unique experience of natural beauty, history, and local flavors that will stay in your heart forever.

Welcome to the Ćiro Cycling Trail, a unique route blending history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage across Herzegovina and Southern Dalmatia. Once a narrow-gauge railway built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it has now been transformed into a cycling trail passing through spectacular landscapes, charming villages, and historical landmarks.

The Historical Legacy of the Ćiro Railway

Known as “Ćiro,” this railway once connected the cities of Mostar, Čapljina, Ravno, Trebinje, and Dubrovnik. Originally constructed as a strategic military project, it quickly became a symbol of life and progress for the region's inhabitants. Although decommissioned in 1976, its legacy and stories remain deeply woven into the identity of the area.

Today, this route offers cyclists an opportunity to explore rich history and natural beauty on two wheels, riding through tunnels, across bridges, and alongside enchanting rivers and lakes.

A Historic Path for Cycle Tourism

For those seeking a cycling adventure combining history, natural wonders, and cultural heritage, the Ćiro Trail is the perfect choice. Once a historic narrow-gauge railway with steam locomotives, it is now a cyclist’s paradise stretching through the heart of Herzegovina to the Adriatic coast.

Unforgettable Experiences Along the Way

The journey begins in Mostar, where the iconic Old Bridge is a must-see. After exploring the wonders of Blagaj, continue cycling through tranquil villages along the Buna River and follow the Ćiro trail. As you approach Čapljina, don’t miss the nature reserve of Hutovo Blato and the historic town of Počitelj, both brimming with unique charm.

From Čapljina, the adventure continues toward Ravno and Popovo Polje. This segment includes gravel paths through pristine nature, a crossing over the Eiffel Bridge, and rides through tunnels preserving the route's authenticity. Visit the Station Motel in Ravno, once a Ćiro station, and savor local gastronomy.

For Adventurers and Leisure Seekers

Ćiro Trail offers something for everyone—from easy paved sections ideal for road bikes to challenging gravel paths with breathtaking views. Bring a flashlight for tunnels and enough water for longer stretches, and prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Why Choose the Ćiro Trail?

This cycling route is not just a physical adventure but a journey through the history and culture of Herzegovina. Each pedal stroke tells a story of the past, offers a view of untouched nature, and provides an opportunity to connect with the local community. Notice:

On the map, 3 additional routes are marked (in blue), which you can use to bypass the macadam sections on the Ćiro trail, as well as an additional route that leads to the city of Dubrovnik.

Regarding the 3 additional routes:

  1. The section from Dračevo to Hutovo is a macadam track suitable for MTB bikes. The track is not maintained and can be technically demanding.
  2. The route in the village of Hutovo also includes an asphalt section that bypasses the macadam section, which is not maintained and can be technically demanding. Therefore, we definitely recommend using the asphalt section.
  3. The route is an asphalt section from Ravno to Zavala, but we recommend using the macadam section, since the municipality of Ravno has reconstructed that part of the trail and regularly maintains it.

An additional route (branch 4) from Hum is a branch that leads to the city of Dubrovnik. We recommend that you set aside an extra day and go to Dubrovnik after visiting Trebinje.

Route details

Your journey begins at Mostar, known for the famous The old bridge – a symbol of the city and a world cultural heritage site. We recommend enjoying a traditional Bosnian coffee or breakfast here with a view of the Neretva River, before embarking on an adventure.

From Mostar you head towards Blagaj, where we briefly depart from the original route of the Ćira Railway to visit this picturesque place. Blagaj, with its source of the Buna River and Tekija located under steep cliffs, offers a unique combination of natural beauty and cultural and historical sights.

After exploring Blagaj, we return to the trail along the Buna River, passing through tranquil villages until it meets the Neretva River. Here, we rejoin the Ćiro railway route and continue cycling along the right bank of the Neretva through idyllic villages with minimal traffic, all the way to Čapljina.

In Čapljina, if you decide to cross the bridge and cross the Neretva River, you have the opportunity to visit Hutovo blato – one of the largest wetlands in Europe, as well as the old town Počitelja – a medieval town located on the steep slopes above the Neretva River. Both locations are a must-see but are not included in the GPX route, so please contact us for detailed directions.

After arriving in Čapljina, we recommend a tour of the site Mogorjelo, a Roman villa rustica, before continuing towards the village of Dračevo. Here you have two options:

  1. Paved Route (suitable for road and gravel bikes) leading through the village of Hutovo.
  2. Gravel Route – the original Ćiro railway, ideal for MTB bikes, offering spectacular views of Svitavsko Lake, crossing the Eiffel Bridge and passing through a dozen tunnels (bring a flashlight). Please note that there are no water sources on this section, so stock up at the shop in Dračevo.

Both routes take you to Hutovo, from where you continue on asphalt through abandoned villages to the municipality Ravno. In Ravno, where the renovated Ćira station is located – Motel Stanica Ravno, we recommend a coffee break or meal.

From Ravno, you continue towards Zavala, where you can visit Zavala Monastery and Vjetrenica Cave, and have lunch at the Zavala Inn. The route continues through peaceful villages with views of Popovo Field, all the way to the village of Hum – the largest Ćiro station. Here, the route splits: left towards Trebinje, and right towards Dubrovnik.

This Ciro Trail route takes you into the city Trebinje, and you will cycle through quiet areas all the way to Duži, where you will join the Trebinje – Dubrovnik road. This charming town is known for its local specialties and wine cellars – an unmissable experience for every visitor.

Note: The entire route is approximately 141 km, so if you wish to split the journey into two days, you can find BikeFriendly accommodations for rest and overnight stays on our website. For more information and GPX files, please contact us via email.

RECOMMENDATION

Although the trail mostly takes us through populated areas, on the section from Dračevo to Hutovo sela you drive through an uninhabited area without drinking water, so we recommend that you stock up on a large amount of water in a local store in Dračevo. This is especially important in summer days. On the macadam section, there are sharp stones and the possibility of thorns in some parts, so it is necessary to bring a mini tool and a tool for patching inner tires. Due to the length of the tour, it is recommended to inform family or friends about your cycling plans before going on the ride.
Helmet mandatory!
