DISCOVER THE ĆIRO TRAIL: A CYCLING ADVENTURE FROM MOSTAR TO DUBROVNIK

You’ve likely heard of the famous Stari Most in Mostar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Adriatic gem, the UNESCO city of Dubrovnik. But did you know that these two destinations are connected by an incredible cycling route following the historic narrow-gauge railway Ćiro? If you’re searching for a cycling adventure that will fill your soul with unforgettable memories, stunning landscapes, and rich history, the Ćiro Trail is the perfect journey for you.

History Comes Alive on Two Wheels

The route traces the path of the steam locomotive that linked Mostar and Dubrovnik from the late 19th century, breathing life into the heart of Herzegovina. Built by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the narrow-gauge railway was vital for transportation and development, and today it has been transformed into a magical cycling trail that winds through villages, tunnels, and bridges steeped in history. Riding the Ćiro Trail, you’ll feel echoes of the past as you descend into Popovo Polje or cross the Eiffel Bridge.

Pedal through the heart of Herzegovina and southern Dalmatia, feeling the spirit of past times as you follow the tracks of industrial heritage. Imagine cycling through scenic landscapes, the air filled with the fragrance of lavender and immortelle, while sunlight filters through Mediterranean vegetation.

Route Highlights

Your journey begins in Mostar, where you shouldn’t miss taking a photo by the Old Bridge and enjoying a Bosnian coffee with a view of the Neretva River. The trail then leads you to Blagaj, renowned for the magnificent Buna spring and the Dervish tekke. Although not part of the original railway, Blagaj is a must-visit destination.

Heading south, you’ll pass through Čapljina, Hutovo Blato—a paradise for nature lovers—and Počitelj, a medieval gem perched on the slopes above the Neretva. Every segment of this path unveils stories of cultural heritage and natural beauty.

One of the most thrilling sections is the gravel road along Svitavsko Lake, featuring ten unlit tunnels and the Eiffel Bridge. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and plenty of water, as this part of the journey offers a true spirit of adventure.

The Final Kilometers to Dubrovnik

As you near Dubrovnik, you’ll ride through abandoned villages and captivating landscapes. From Ravno to Zavala, renovated railway stations now serve as motels and restaurants offering rest and culinary delights. Zavala also hides the mysterious Vjetrenica Cave—one of the largest karst caves in this part of Europe.

The Croatian border near Ivanica marks the last stage of your journey. Descend toward Dubrovnik, enjoy the breathtaking sea views, and spend time exploring this historic city.

Route details

Cycling starts in Mostar, where you will pass by the most famous landmark - Old bridge – and enjoy the view of this UNESCO World Heritage gem. Starting from Mostar, the route heads south through the Neretva River valley, following the path of the former narrow-gauge railway Ćiro. You will cycle through picturesque areas, passing small villages and authentic Herzegovinian settlements. Enjoy the natural beauty, peaceful roads with minimal traffic, and old stone bridges.

In Čapljina , you have the opportunity to turn off the main route and cross the bridge to the other side of the Neretva River to visit two gems of the region – the historic town of Počitelj and the nature reservoar Hutovo blatoThese destinations are worth every pedal stroke due to their beauty and cultural significance. After visiting, you return to Čapljina, from where you continue cycling on the Ćiro railway route towards the village of Dračevo. Before reaching Dračevo, we recommend stopping at Mogorjela – Roman villa rustica, where you can explore the remains of a Roman villa rustica, one of the most important archaeological sites in the region.

The route then continues towards Dračevo and further to the village of Hutovo and Ravno, where the former important Ćiro narrow-gauge railway station is located. You will cycle through local villages with views of the Svitavsko Lake, and beyond Hutovo, you will be guided by a beautiful landscape with views of Popovo Field. This part of the route, with its spectacular scenery and passage through dozens of tunnels, offers a unique cycling experience. Upon reaching Ravno (Zavala), a recommend to visit the UNESCO-listed Cave Vjetrenica, the largest and most famous cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, rich in endemic species and unique underground formations. Nearby, you can also visit the restored Motel Stanica and Guesthouse Zavala, where you can enjoy a break before continuing your journey.

From Ravno, the ride continues towards the villages of Zavala and Hum, through quiet karst landscapes and with beautiful views of Popovo Field. Passing through what was once the largest Ćiro railway station in Hum, you can choose between turning towards Trebinju or continuing towards Dubrovnik. The descent from Ivanica towards the Adriatic Sea reveals panoramic views of the Dubrovnik region, and the end of the journey in Dubrovnik offers a unique reward – a tour of the historic city under UNESCO protection, which captivates with its architecture, history, and Mediterranean charm.

RECOMMENDATION

Although the trail mostly takes us through populated areas, on the section from Dračevo to Hutovo sela you drive through an uninhabited area without drinking water, so we recommend that you stock up on a large amount of water in a local store in Dračevo. This is especially important in summer days. On the macadam section, there are sharp stones and the possibility of thorns in some parts, so it is necessary to bring a mini tool and a tool for patching inner tires. Due to the length of the tour, it is recommended to inform family or friends about your cycling plans before going on the ride.
Helmet mandatory!
