40 km south of Mostar, there is the lovely city-museum Stolac, a city of extremely ancient origin (various remains point to a prehistoric settlement) across which the Bregava River, a tributary of the Neretva River, flows.
Stolac is the Herzegovinian city with the largest number of archaeological sites and historical and cultural monuments. It was conquered by the Turks in 1466 and this explains its Ottoman architecture. Among the most significant buildings that survived war damage in the 1990s, the Inat Ćuprija, Podgradska Ćuprija and Begovska Ćuprija bridges, from the 15th and 19th centuries, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 16th century stand out.
The historical heart of Stolac is the medieval town of Vidoški grad (15th century), while the nearby Illyrian town of Daorson, founded in the 3rd century BC, is an archaeological area whose walls are a real wonder for tourists. The Necropolis of Radimlja, 2 km from Stolac, stands out as one of the most fascinating and mysterious places in this region: here you can see dozens of stećaks, tombstones of old Bogomils, dating from the 14th-16th centuries. century. Some are decorated with paintings and symbolic stone reliefs, which depict hunting scenes, stylized men on horses, weapons, etc.
This necropolis is considered one of the most important in the country due to its dimensions and the value of numerous stećaks. In addition, near Stolac, fans of Ottoman architecture can visit the Sultan Selim Mosque (Emperor's Mosque, 16th century) and the mosques in Uzunovića and Ćuprija (18th century). The residential oriental architecture complex of Begovina (19th century) is particularly interesting. Daily buses (Bregava Trans) connect Mostar with Stoč and Radimlja.
