Stjepan Grad – Blagaj Fortress is a historical fortress located above Blagaj, dating back to the late antique period, and played a key role in the political and military events of Herzegovina. This fortress was actually a city palace, surrounded by strong ramparts with characteristic jagged peaks, which are still visible today and testify to its strategic importance.
The city was the seat of Stjepan Vukušić Kosača, one of the most important rulers of the Herzegovina Land, after whom the city was named. Under his rule, Stjepan grad became the center of political and military activities, but also a symbol of the power and influence of the Kosača dynasty. Over time, the city witnessed many turbulences, including conflicts and battles, and was of crucial importance for control over Herzegovina.
Stjepan Grad remained a key point until 1473, when it was conquered by the Turkish army. After that, the fortress became the seat and residence of the kadija, marking a change in political power in this part of the country. Today, Stjepan Grad provides insight into the rich history and cultural changes of Herzegovina, and offers visitors incredible views of the surrounding landscape and the remains of this mighty fortress.
