Mills on the Bregava River, located in city of Stolac, are one of the most recognizable symbols of the rich cultural and historical heritage of this Herzegovinian city. Although they have lost their original practical purpose today, the mills remain as silent witnesses of past times and important monuments of the traditional way of life.
In the past, almost every small river in the region was home to dozens of mills, but few have survived to this day. The mills on the Bregava River are among the best preserved and represent a valuable part of centuries of history. From the 16th to the 20th century, they were key economic institutions, and in Stolac itself there were once about 22 of them.
The mills belonged to prominent Stolac families such as Mehmedbašić, Behmen, Rizvanbegović, and others. Their architecture, harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape, reflects the spirit of the time when they were an indispensable part of the daily life of the local population.
Today, these mills on the Bregava River attract visitors with their beauty and historical significance, reminding us of the rich tradition and harmony between man and nature that has marked this region.
