Cemetery of Peace on Bile: An Oasis of Remembrance and Reconciliation

Located on the Bile plateau, between Mostar and Široki Brijeg, in the Goranci parish, Cemetery of Peace stands out as one of the most powerful memorial sites in Herzegovina. This unique memorial complex is dedicated to all the victims of totalitarian regimes, and its symbolism far exceeds that of traditional monuments. Cemetery of Peace is a testament to courage, the struggle for reconciliation, and the desire for lasting peace, bringing together people of different faiths, cultures, and nations.

On the impressive plateau, 18 kilometers from Mostar, more than 50,000 white stone crosses stand. Each cross bears the name of a victim, paying tribute to the innocent souls who perished during World War II and under the communist regime. The cornerstone for the construction the Cemetery of Peace was laid in 2013, and since then, this place has become an increasingly significant destination for visitors from around the world.

At the foot of the memorial complex, near the ossuary, lie the remains of the victims, many of whom remain unidentified. Here, in the silence of the mountain, visitors can pay their respects and engage in deep reflection on the tragic past and its meaning for a peaceful future.

Cemetery of Peace is not just a place of remembrance; it has become a symbol of reconciliation. On this historic plateau stands the Church of St. Joseph the Worker, blessed in 2016, which, with its simple yet imposing appearance, stands out against the surrounding landscape. The bells of the church, installed in 2021, call to prayer and meditation, while the Pietà statue, created by artist Ilija Skočibušić, serves as a reminder of the suffering endured by the Croatian people, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and coexistence.

For those looking to enhance their experience, the Cemetery of Peace offers a unique opportunity to visit the wild horses of Bilima. Around 200 wild horses live in this area, symbolizing freedom and survival. Visitors can enjoy an unforgettable experience observing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.

After the tour, visitors can indulge in a meal and relaxation at “Konoba Goranci” in Goranci, located near the Cemetery of Peace. This authentic tavern offers local specialties and true Herzegovinian hospitality, making it the perfect place to rest and unwind after the visit.

The Cemetery of Peace on Bile has become an essential destination for those wishing to understand the deep roots of this region’s history and for those seeking to experience the power of reconciliation and hope. Visit the Cemetery of Peace and experience the unique atmosphere that this place offers, blending the past and present in traces of peace, reconciliation, and unity.

This destination provides the perfect blend of history, nature, and spirituality, making it an unmissable stop on your journey through Herzegovina.
