Cycling event: Ciro Trail Zavala – Trebinje
Are you ready to visit Trebinje? Yes, that small, beautiful tourist town in the south is ready for the first cyclists, and we arrive in Trebinje by cycling along Cira's track from Zavala.
Biciklistički klub “Vučji Zub” i udruga “HerzegovinaBike” najavljuju biciklijadu “Ćirinom prugom Zavala – Trebinje” koja će se održati u nedelju 13.04.2025. sa početkom u 11.00h ispred restorana Zavala u Zavali. Biciklijada se realizira uz financijsku potporu: Općine Ravno, Spilje Vjetrenica, tvrtke HT Eronet, Continental Tires, Škoda Apolo, agencije REDAH and Capriolo SC Mostar , and in order to promote "South Herzegovina and the Ćiro Narrow Gauge Railway".
Druga po redu Ćirina biciklijada u 2025 godini vodi nas od Zavale do Trebinja, stazom u dužini od 45km u jednom pravcu. U oba pravca nakupiti ćemo nekih 90km, no nemojte da vas kilometraža prepadne, jer staza je potpuno ravna i životopisna sa prelijepim krajolicima. Kao što smo kazali ovo jedna jako lijepa dionica, gdje srećemo velik broj Ćirinih stanica, kao i onu najljepšu i najveću “HUM”, gdje ćemo svakako napraviti pauzu za okrijepu i obilazak. Ponavljamo, dionica je potpuno ravna (možete zaboraviti na fizički umor), a kolege iz Trebinja su se već par puta pokazali kao izvrsni domaćini, tako da nas svakako očekuje zabava, druženje i bogat sadržaj. Biciklijadu završavamo u starom gradu Trebinju, sa obilaskom grada uz turističkog vodiča, a prije toga svakako nezaobilazn je posjet Ćiri – vlaku koji još stoji i prkosi vremenu, gdje ćemo napraviti zajedničku fotografiju. Na ovoj biciklijadi ugostiti će nas Grad Trebinje, Turisticka Organizacija Grada Trebinja i Biciklistički klub Vučji zub.

The bike ride starts in front of the Zavala restaurant in Zavala, where all participants have a large parking lot at their disposal and can park their vehicles and refresh themselves in the Zavala restaurant until the start of our bike ride. The start of the bike ride and the beginning of our socializing is planned for 11:00 a.m., and the bike ride goes along the route where Ćiro traveled in the past in a length of 45 km from Zavala to Trebinje, or 90 km in the total length of the bike ride. It is important to mention that the section is flat and not physically demanding, and all participants will have a van to accompany them in case they feel too much cycling. There is also an option for a van to transfer those who find 90 km too much from Trebinje to Zavala. The participants of the cycling event will also have at their disposal 8 volunteers, experienced cyclists who will take care of the safety of all participants during cycling and take care of any unforeseen situation and remove it as soon as possible, as well as a police escort in dangerous places, where there is increased vehicle traffic.
The entire route has an asphalted surface on which, in addition to MTB bikes, you can also ride trekking or road bikes. It is suitable for all cyclists, since the route and rhythm of the ride are easy and suitable for the majority.
Volunteers, a service vehicle, photos and video from the bike ride are available to all participants, and they are provided with: refreshments, water and first aid in the service vehicle...
HISTORY/HISTORY OF CIRE:
In the past, a narrow-gauge railway with a steam locomotive ran from Mostar along the Neretva river, through Čapljina, Popovo polje, Ravno, and in the town of Hum (the main railway junction) it split into two tracks, where one leads to Trebinje and on to Bileća and Nikšić , and the other branch to Uskoplje (that is, Zelenica and Dubrovnik). It is important to emphasize that in the town of Uskoplje (2km before Ivanica) we had another junction, where one branch goes to Zelenica (Montenegro), and the other to Dubrovnik (Croatia).
Construction of the railway began in 1898 and ended in 1901. During its existence, Ćiro connected places in Herzegovina and brought them life, and today the railway has been reconstructed into a bicycle path.

The Vučji Zub Cycling Club from Trebinje was founded with the aim of developing cycling in Trebinje and Isročna Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska). The address of the club is Stari grad, Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The association for the promotion of cycling "Hercegovina bicycling" was created as a result of the need to promote cycling in Herzegovina in a comprehensive way, with the desire to gather around it all relevant cycling employees and cycling clubs in order to jointly try to brand Herzegovina as a region desirable for cycling, and which would ultimately contribute to the popularization and massification of cycling, but also to the creation of preconditions for the development of cycle tourism, which in recent years in Europe, but also in the world, is increasingly expanding and becoming an important tourist branch.
Association HerzegovinaBike was founded on February 8, 2013. and gathers members of cycling clubs from Herzegovina. Since its foundation, the association, together with the ministries of resources (Tourism, Culture and Sports), has been actively promoting cycling as cycling tourism first, and then as sport, recreation and a way of life. So far, we have presented a number of projects of active cycling as a sport and recreation, of which we would like to highlight: Bicycle caravans of friendship "Mostar - Vukovar" which gathered over 1,000 cyclists from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Croatia, International bicycle road races "Hercegovina Classic", International multi-day the "Blidinje BIKE Festival" event, which gathers thousands of cyclists and tourists from several countries through a three-day organization, and she was also the holder of the project to mark the European Car-Free Day and organized several cycling events in urban areas. Association "Hercegovina Bicikl" gathers cycling clubs from the areas of Mostar, Široki Brijeg, Posušje, Grud, Drinovac, Ljubuški, Čapljina, Neum, Trebinje, Ravno, Stolac, Jablanica and Rama.
The association for the promotion of cycling "Hercegovina bicycling" together with REDAH participates in several projects related to the sports and tourism promotion of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and independently implements the project "By bike through Herzegovina", which passed the competition of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Firmaprojekt fund of the established from USAID and SIDA organizations. The association is also an active partner in the revitalization project of the Austro-Hungarian narrow-gauge railway, popularly called Ćiro, a project that has received worldwide positive attention and has been covered by many foreign media, and which connected Mostar and Dubrovnik via a bicycle route. Also, together with the West Herzegovina County Office for EU Integration, we implement and actively participate in the implementation of the "CYCLING RURAL" project, which aims to promote rural tourism through bicycle paths and cycle tourism offers. Furthermore, for several years now, the association, in cooperation with the Bicycle Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina and tourist associations, has been implementing a training project for cycle tourism guides, and together with the Regional Development Agency of Herzegovina "REDAH" has been implementing the "Bike Friendly" project in which we educate motels, restaurants and inns about cycle tourism. cyclists as guests and we assign them BikeFriendly tags.

Trebinje is the southernmost city of Republika Srpska and BiH. It is located in the Trebišnjica river valley, on the tri-border of BiH, Montenegro and Croatia. The altitude of the urban part of the city is about 275 meters above sea level. The geographical position is 42° 42′ N and 18° 20′ E. The town is located at a significant crossroads, 27 km from Dubrovnik, 115 km from Mostar, 360 km from Banja Luka, 70 km from Nikšić, 120 km from Podgorica, 38 km from Herceg Novi, Sarajevo – 230, Belgrade – 480 km.
The territory of the city occupies an area of 904 km². According to the latest estimates, Trebinje has about 30,000 inhabitants, of which more than 75 percent live in the urban part of the city. There are also three border crossings on the territory of the city: two with Montenegro (towards Nikšić and Herceg Novi) and one with Croatia (towards Dubrovnik).
The area of the city is very rich in natural potentials (moderate climate, water, sun, wind, medicinal plants, etc.) which are still not sufficiently used. The economy of Trebinje relies mostly on the electrical energy sector and partly on the processing sector. However, lately, priority has been given to the development of agricultural and food production, tourist offer and entrepreneurship in tourism, since in these spheres Trebinje has significant comparative advantages compared to other places, and insufficiently used potentials.
The rich cultural and historical heritage, climate and favorable geographical location have significantly influenced that in the projection of the future development of Trebinje, tourism occupies a special strategic place. The Jovan Dučić park and the specific botanical and catering complex of sixteen hundred-year-old plane trees - the summer garden - attract the special attention of many tourists, in addition to the old city center built in the Mediterranean style. There is also a military fortification from the beginning of the 18th century, the Old Town or Kastel, with its narrow streets, vaults, gates and stone buildings, Osman Pasha's and Sultan Ahmed's mosques, the Museum of Herzegovina, numerous cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
The Trebišnjica River, the longest sinkhole in Europe, divides Trebinje into two parts. According to numerous citizens and visitors, Trebišnjica is a river of unusual beauty and purity. On its right bank in Police, next to the Perović (Arslanagić) bridge, there is a small church next to which the prefect of Trebinje, Grd., is buried. Vlastelin Grd lies under the oldest known stećak in the entire Republika Srpska and BiH. The city banks of Trebišnjica are connected by three bridges.
Trebinje and its surroundings are home to some of the most famous medieval monasteries. These are: the monastery of Saints Peter and Paul in Petrovo polje, Zavala on the edge of Popovo polje, Tvrdoš in the place of the same name near Trebinje, as well as the Duži monastery, which was previously the seat of the diocese, and in the 19th century the seat of the insurgent headquarters of Luka Vukalović and Mić Ljubibratić.
The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord is located in the "Jovan Dučić" city park. There is a significant cultural and historical monument in Mostaći - the Church of Saint Kliment. In the very heart of the city is the Roman Catholic cathedral church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built at the beginning of the 20th century. In the immediate vicinity of the Peter and Paul Monastery, there is Paul's Cave, a sort of gathering place for pilgrims and the place where, according to tradition, St. Paul, on his way to Rome, once preached.
On the Crkvina above Trebinje is Hercegovačka Gračanica - the endowment of Branko Tupanjac, the founder and executor of Dučić's will. In this church, according to Dučić's wishes, the poet's mortal remains rest. In Popovo polje, in Mrkonjići, not far from Trebinje, on the foundations of the birthplace of the saint and miracle worker Saint Vasilij Ostroški and Tvrdoški, the Spiritual Center - metoch of the Peter and Paul Monastery was built.
In Police, in Brankovina, there is one of the best-preserved medieval towers in Herzegovina - the Branković Tower, that is, the fortress of Vuk Branković's grandfather or father.
On the way to Bileća is the Dobrićevo monastery, a valuable cultural monument with frescoes that are most likely the work of the last great Byzantine painter, Georgi Mitrofanović, or one of his best students.
The tourist offer of the city is completed by excursion sites near Trebinje - Jazina, Ubla, Lastva, Studenac, and numerous restaurants with summer gardens, hotels, motels and other accommodation facilities. A significant role in the promotion of Trebinje as a tourist center is played by the Tourist Organization of the city of Trebinje, which has so far implemented a number of projects important for building the tourist identity of the city.
The historical retrospective of Trebinje testifies that the city has always been considered a cultural center in the region of today's eastern Herzegovina. A rich cultural heritage, numerous cultural and historical monuments, a long tradition and contemporary cultural tendencies come together in the unique ambience of the city.
Today, Trebinje is a modern cultural community, with numerous cultural preferences such as folk tradition, music, theater, film, literature and other artistic creativity. Cultural affinities are based on the synthesis of traditional and contemporary artistic expressions, where the cultural flows that we have inherited are respected and appreciated, as well as the new ones that we strive for through the increasingly frequent layering of monocultural traditions and the appreciation of the multicultural heritage entrusted to us in the past.
As part of efforts to preserve and improve cultural life, numerous events and ceremonies are held in Trebinje. For a long time, Trebinje has been an environment where culture represents a spiritual need, and recently it has also been the driving force behind the development of tourism.
"Trebinje - the city of culture", conceived in the context of the Euro-Mediterranean cultural tradition, is a kind of legacy of Jovan Dučić, one of the most important Serbian poets. The concept of Trebinje as a city of culture is built on the basis of cultural manifestations that, as a meeting place of eminent artists, go beyond the regional and national character. First of all, it is the already traditional Trebinje Cultural Summer - an event that has been attracting many art lovers for several years, from April to October, with its various contents.
In addition to the above, Trebinje is also the economic, health, educational and sports center of eastern Herzegovina. There are numerous educational institutions, schools, colleges, museums, legacies, galleries, art colonies, amateur theaters, cultural-artistic and sports societies. There are three higher education institutions in Trebinje: the Academy of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Production and Management, and the College of Tourism and Hospitality.
