Neum is a municipality in the south of Herzegovina. It is the only one from Bosnia and Herzegovina izlaz na Jadransko more. The territory of this city was ceded to the Turks by the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1718. With the signing of the Dayton Agreement, the municipality of Neum as a whole became part of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the last census of BiH, 97.64% of the population are Croats.
Geography
The town of Neum cuts across two parts of the Republic of Croatia as a result of the Peace of Srijemski Karlovci in 1699. The distance from Dubrovnik is 70 km, from Dubrovnik airport 90 km, from Mostar 70 km, Međugorje 70 km, from the railway stations Ploče and Metković 30 km each.
Within the larger Maloston Bay, enclosed by the Klek peninsula, is the Neum Bay. It belongs to the Adriatic Sea and is the only exit of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the sea. The bay is 6 kilometers long and 1.2 kilometers wide. Klek is home to Mediteranetum, a botanical reserve of Mediterranean flora.
Neum has two border crossings with Croatia on the State Road D8, which connects the northern and southern Adriatic. The crossing "Neum 1" borders Klek, and "Neum 2" borders Zaton Doli. The European road "E65" passes through Neum.
Climate
The town of Neum is characterized by long and warm summers and short and mild winters, and is one of the coastal towns with the highest number of sunny days. Average monthly sea surface temperatures range from 13 °C in January to 32 °C in July and August. Favorable climatic conditions make it possible, in addition to swimming and sunbathing, for almost 7 months of the year for climate therapy, which consists of clean coastal air, walks along the coast and various water sports.
The mild Mediterranean climate in this area favors the cultivation of citrus fruits, the following are traditionally cultivated: tobacco, figs, vines, almonds, laurel, cabbage, potatoes and onions. Several types of cheese, wine, brandy from vines and herbs, dried and salted fish, prosciutto, dried figs, honey and woolen products are also produced.
