Arslanagića Bridge

Arslanagića bridge – a pearl of Ottoman architecture in Trebinje

Perović (Arslanagić) Bridge It is one of the most beautiful and significant monuments from the Ottoman period in Trebinje and occupies a special place in 16th-century Balkan architecture. Its construction is linked to the famous Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, who built it in 1574 as an endowment in honor of his son who died in battle with the Venetians.

Historical significance and name

The bridge was originally located at a crossing point for merchants, armies and travelers, serving as an important communication link. After the Turks were pushed out of Herceg Novi in 1687, many Ottoman families moved to Trebinje. Among them was Arslan-aga, who was granted estates east of the city – in Zupci, Necvjeć and Jasen. As a reward for his services, he was granted the right to collect tolls on this bridge, after which the bridge was given a new name – Arslanagića Bridge.

The fate of the bridge and its relocation

The construction of a hydroelectric power system on the Trebišnjica River in the mid-20th century significantly influenced the fate of the bridge. In 1965, with the formation of a reservoir, the bridge was submerged. Thanks to the efforts of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, the bridge was carefully dismantled and moved downstream. The relocation process was completed in 1966, when the bridge was re-erected at its current location, between the settlements of Gradina (right bank of the Trebišnjica) and Police (left bank).

Bridge architecture

The Arslanagić Bridge stands out for its imposing beauty and distinctive architectural style. It is built of hewn stone, with two large arches and several smaller openings that allow water to flow during high water levels. Its harmonious proportions, solid construction and elegant shapes make it a true masterpiece of Ottoman architectural heritage. The bridge not only represents the pinnacle of the then technology and art, but also symbolizes the connection of cultures and peoples through the centuries.

Cultural value

Today, the Arslanagića Bridge is not only a historical monument, but also an unmissable tourist attraction in Trebinje. It serves as a witness to the past, connecting tradition and modern life of the city. A walk along its stone surfaces brings an impression of timelessness, while the view of Trebišnjica below the bridge reflects like a picture postcard.

Arslanagić Bridge is one of the most important symbols of Trebinje, a place that captivates with its historical story, architectural beauty, and spiritual strength, attracting visitors to explore its rich past and experience the beauty of Herzegovina.
