The association says that they believe that these new routes will enable lovers of cycling and outdoor tourism to deeply immerse themselves in the natural and cultural beauty of Herzegovina and its surroundings. These routes not only offer an unforgettable cycling experience, but also provide an opportunity to explore the rich history and cultural treasures of the Herzegovina region.
Each route is carefully designed to allow cyclists to fully experience the natural beauty, cultural sights and historical sites, making each trip unique and unforgettable. HerzegovinaBike invites all cycling enthusiasts, adventurers and explorers to join this exciting adventure and discover the magic of Herzegovina in a new, exciting way.
1. UNESCO Heritage cycling trail: From Mostar to Dubrovnik“
Thematic route, "UNESCO Heritage cycling trail: From Mostar to Dubrovnik", offers an extraordinary cycling experience through the four most important UNESCO monuments in the region, while at the same time enabling cyclists to enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of Herzegovina and Dalmatia.
The route starts in Mostar, on the famous The old bridge, which is under UNESCO protection and which, with its imposing arch and historical significance, attracts visitors from all over the world. From here, cyclists head towards Stolac, where there is another UNESCO monument, Necropolis of stećak Radimlje and Necropolis of stećak Boljuni, are some of the most important archaeological sites from the Middle Ages. This impressive collection of stećaks, covered with complex ornaments and inscriptions, provides an insight into the rich history and culture of the peoples who lived in this area.
Nakon Stoca, ruta vodi prema Ravnom/Zavali i UNESCO zaštićenoj Cave Vjetrenica, which is one of the largest and most important speleological sites in the region. The Vjetrenica Cave, with its fascinating underground formations and rich fauna, offers cyclists the opportunity to explore a unique natural phenomenon that is decorated with numerous cave decorations.
At the end of this unforgettable adventure, the route ends in the UNESCO city of Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". This city, with its rich history and impressive architectural monuments, provides the perfect end to this cycling adventure.
“We have been thinking for a long time about this route and how to connect the UNESCO monuments in Herzegovina, and the moment when the Windmill Cave came under UNESCO protection proved to be the right moment to start with our bicycle path project as a new tourist offer in Herzegovina. Of course, it is important to say that the route can be extended to other locations of stećak that are under UNESCO protection, as well as to Višegrad, where we have the Mehmed Pađa Sokolović bridge under UNESCO protection. We still have a lot of work ahead of us on this route, but its presentation alone gives us the incentive to embark on new EU projects. Our goal is to properly map, mark, photograph and promote this route to tourists from all over the world", commented Toni Zorićpresident of the HerzegovinaBike association.
“This route provides an incredible opportunity to cycle through a region rich in UNESCO World Heritage sites. Our purpose is to enable cycling enthusiasts to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural wealth of our region. We believe that these routes will not only enrich the experience of cyclists, but also contribute to the promotion of Herzegovina as an attractive destination for all those looking for adventure, active vacations, history and nature.", added Zorić.
2. “Cemetery of Peace and Wild Horses on Bili“
Another local route, in the vicinity of the city of Mostar, is called "Cemetery of Peace and Wild Horses on Bili", and leads cyclists through fascinating local destinations around the city of Mostar. As the Association says, through this route they want to offer tourists additional activities and interesting things so that they can stay longer and stay in the City of Mostar. The goal is to present a minimum of five local routes in the vicinity of Mostar that will be offered as an arrangement through local tourist agencies.
The route starts in Mostar, from where visitors will have the opportunity to experience the lively city of Mostar by bike, and then head towards the Peace Cemetery. The Peace Cemetery, located in Bile, represents the heart of deep historical significance. This place, dedicated to the victims of totalitarian regimes and wars, offers visitors not only an opportunity for reflection, but also an impressive natural scenery.
After visiting the Peace Cemetery, cyclists will head towards Bili, where they will have the opportunity to see wild horses in their natural habitat. This zone, covered with green expanses, hosts herds of wild horses that graze freely. Visitors will be able to see these imposing animals moving through untouched nature, providing an unforgettable sight and a unique viewing opportunity. And that's not all, after visiting the Wild Horses, the route takes them to the Stećak Necropolis in Gornji Polog, which is an important archaeological site. It contains 75 stećaks arranged in three groups, including 28 slabs, 22 chests, one chest with a base, three gables, one gabled with a base, and 20 stećaks whose shapes are partially indeterminate.
"Cycling route, "Cemetery of Peace and Wild Horses on Bili”, offers a unique experience of exploring natural beauty and cultural sights in the surroundings of Mostar. The goal of this route is to offer guests new facilities and attract them to stay longer in the city of Mostar. We plan to develop "Top 5 one-day routes" in the vicinity of Mostar, which we will offer through arrangements in cooperation with local travel agencies.
Both routes presented by HerzegovinaBike provide incredible opportunities for cycling enthusiasts to explore the wealth of cultural and natural beauty of Herzegovina and Dalmatia. The association invites all cyclists, adventurers and nature lovers to join these exciting routes, discover the beauty of our region and create unforgettable memories, and as they say they will soon start with promotional activities and organization of cycling events.
