Široki Brijeg is a town and municipality in southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The name of the city means "wide hill" in Croatian. The city is sometimes called "Široki Brig", and among the inhabitants of Herzegovina simply "Široki". From 1945 to 1990, it was officially called Lištica, after the river that flows through it.

HISTORY

Ancient period

Ruins from the Illyrian period confirm that the area of Široki Brijeg was inhabited in prehistoric times. The evidence can be seen on Gradina hill on the border of Mokrog and Čerigaj. There are also evidences on the walls of the forts where they used to be. During the ancient period, there was a lot of life in the area. From the Roman era, there are remains of a fortress (refugium) in the village of Biograci and a basilica in Mokro; there are the remains of forts and roads.

The medieval emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenet mentions that Mokriskik [citation needed] was located in the area. The basilica in Mokro was built and demolished several times in the Middle Ages and served its purpose. In its neighborhood there is a nekrepola with stećci, which can be found elsewhere. The number and size show that this area (from the 12th to the 15th century) was very populous and wealthy[citation needed]. From that period, the longest plaque on a stećak written in Bosnian Cyrillic, known as the Kočerinska ploča, is preserved in Kočerin. The remains of the medieval fortress are located in Bork, near the source of the Lištica river.

Ottoman rule

After the Turkish conquest in the middle of the 15th century, the population was mostly rural and mountainous.

Until the middle of the 19th century, Herzegovina was cut off from social, cultural and political events in other European countries.
